VeriSign Inc. the leading company behind web infrastructure services and registration of domain names has announced that the increased prices for registering all .com and .net names will come in to effect from January 15th 2012.

The domain registrar has signed a contract with ICANN to increase prices for .com domain by 7% over the duration of four years. The contract was signed between the two in 2006. Also, VeriSign has renewed its contract with ICANN for maintaining .net registration in June this year and has a right to increase the cost by 10% over a period of next six years.

According to the announcement made, prices for .com registrations are set to increase from $7.34 to $7.85 while price for every .net registration will increase from $4.65 to $5.11, reports The Register.

“Continued strong global Internet usage growth, along with increasingly powerful distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks levelled against all parts of the Internet’s critical infrastructure, have dramatically increased the demands on Internet infrastructure providers such as VeriSign.” the company stated in a press release.

The new prices may not affect the common folk, but those registering domains in bulk can see their infrastructure cost going high.

VeriSign announced that as of July 1, 2010, the registry fee for .com domain names will increase from $6.86 to $7.34 and that the registry fee for .net domain names will increase, from $4.23 to $4.65.

According to Google’s engineer Matt Cutts the search giant is inclined to introduce a new ranking factor into its algorithm — site speed. Once that happens, your site load time will have a direct impact on your Google rankings.

If you’re a fast site, maybe you should get a little bit of a bonus. If you really have an awfully slow site, then maybe users don’t want that as much , says Cutts.

Google is pushing towards a faster web where web pages can be turned as quickly as those of a print magazine. If your site doesn”t catch up with the pace it doesn”t belong on the first page of search results.

When will Site Speed Become a Ranking Factor?

Google’s already using load speed as a Quality Score factor in its paid search platform AdWords, where advertisers with faster web pages pay less.
