My tip: renew your .com domains, which used/planning to use for long run…

Original press release goes below.

——————————————————————————

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, Dec 17, 2009 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX News Network) — VeriSign, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRSN), the trusted provider of Internet infrastructure services for the networked world, today announced, effective July 1, 2010, an increase in registry domain name fees for .com and .net, per its agreements with ICANN.

VeriSign announced that as of July 1, 2010, the registry fee for .com domain names will increase from $6.86 to $7.34 and that the registry fee for .net domain names will increase, from $4.23 to $4.65.

As the economy and society becomes increasingly dependent on digital technology, it is imperative that investment in the underlying infrastructure, including .com and .net, continue to keep pace with the robust growth of the Internet and ensure its continued security and reliability. Over the last decade, the volume of Internet traffic and domain name system (DNS) queries on VeriSign’s global infrastructure has increased from an average of approximately 2 billion queries per day in the year 2000 to more than 50 billion queries per day today while maintaining 100 percent operational accuracy and stability for the last eleven years.

Over the next decade, VeriSign will continue investment to build out the .com and .net infrastructures to manage the increasing demands on the infrastructure brought on by the proliferation of Internet-enabled phones and devices and the emergence of DNS-centric technologies and services. VeriSign also continues to scale and fortify the .com and .net infrastructures globally to defend against increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks.

Site Speed — Google’s Next Ranking Factor

World Wide Web is soon going to become the Wild Wild Web where the fast guys rule. According to Google’s engineer Matt Cutts the search giant is inclined to introduce a new ranking factor into its algorithm — site speed. Once that happens, your site load time will have a direct impact on your Google rankings.

If you’re a fast site, maybe you should get a little bit of a bonus. If you really have an awfully slow site, then maybe users don’t want that as much , says Cutts.

Google is pushing towards a faster web where web pages can be turned as quickly as those of a print magazine. If your site doesn”t catch up with the pace it doesn”t belong on the first page of search results.

When will Site Speed Become a Ranking Factor?

Google’s already using load speed as a Quality Score factor in its paid search platform AdWords, where advertisers with faster web pages pay less. It”s hard to tell for sure when site speed factor will be officially brought into organic search though. Some experts believe it already has an effect on rankings and Google will give it more weight. Google says speed is yet to become a factor in the ranking algo.

Anyway, it seems reasonable for Google to introduce the new factor together with the new search architecture known as Google Caffeine which is to be rolled out after the holidays (early 2010). Google wants Caffeine to be faster. Higher speed will be hard to achieve with slow sites ranking in top 10, so it makes perfect sense for Google to apply the site speed factor in Caffeine.

Check Your Website Load Time

If your site depends on Google rankings for traffic and sales (which is true for a vast majority of sites) you should be ready for any change in the game, big or small. Taking action before the change even happens is a key to the prosperity of your business.

The new version of WebSite Auditor lets you quickly check your site speed and compare it against your top ten competitors. Doing this is easy as ever with SEO PowerSuite tools. You simply specify your website or web page address and the keyword(s) you’re targeting. WebSite Auditor then finds your top 10 competitors for the keyword and compares your site against them in a variety of ways:

Keyword use and density in all page elements.

Most popular keywords and keyphrases on your and competing webpages.

Problem areas in your content, etc.

And now it also lets you check your site”s load time. If you click through to the Report Tab you’ll see a special Site Load Time section closer to the end of the report. In it you get all the information you need to check whether your site is fast enough to rank in the top 10 of Google.

Download free version of Website Auditor and check your site speed now!

While GoDaddy is biggest and most trusted registrar, I recommend to buy domains only from them. Registerfly gave a good lesson, what could happen if you run a risk and try other registrar (even if it looks good enough).

And even more – you could save money. There are number of promo codes, which give you some savings. Since friends and colleges keep asking me about them, I’ve decided to post them here and keep updating.

Update June 1, 2010

No one of below provided codes worked, except gdbb776 – $7.68 $7.99 /.com renewal – after icann price increase on July 1, 2010.

Update April 2, 2010

gda347d gave $7.17 price for .net renewal and $7.66 for .com one. Should work for new domain registrations too.

Past codes

OYH7 – $7.49 +0.20 ICANN fee .com domains (and renewals too) – sometimes works for other domain extensions too.

goaz006c – 6.99+ICANN fee for new .com domain registrations – works for multiple year registrations (+ free whois privacy protection if you register 5 new domains at once)

goaorg01a – worked for .org renewal ($7.49 + ICANN fee), should work for new .org registrations too. 7/10/2009

gdbb776 – worked for .net renewal ($7.50 + ICANN fee) 7/10/2009

ZINE5 – 10% off anything

ZINE6 – $5 discount on all orders $30 or more

Old, but usually working codes:

hash3 or OYH3 – pay $7.49 instead of 9.99 for each .com domains. If you pay for more than 1 year, $2.50 discount applies for each year.

OYH2 – $5 discount for any services, if total order amount is over $30 (best to use, when keeping total amount is ~ 30$ )

OYH1 – 10% discount for any purchase at GoDaddy (not only domains – includes all services)

If You run multiple web sites, you need hosting account, which allows more than 1 domain/site to host. And best – if each site had unique IP. Probably all hosting companies could offer that – but usually charging about $2/month.

Fortunately one day I”ve found such hosting company, which doesn”t charge extra $ for dedicated IP! When I”ve purchased their services, they allowed only 8 domains for business plan (it was still good, if pay $7.95/month and receive 8 dedicated IP worth $16!) And even more, about week ago they changed some features and now UNLIMITED DOMAINS can be hosted!

Here goes probably best hosting package”s main features:

Host UNLIMITED sites

8 dedicated IP addressess (haven”t found any other hosting company offering this…)

2 FREE DOMAINS (there are some companies offering 1 free domain, but haven”t seen that someone offered 2)

500 Gb web space

3,500 Gb data transfer /month

Free credits for marketing (total value $460, including $50 for Microsoft Ad Center, $50 for Google AdWords, $50 for Yahoo! search marketing etc.)

FREE Setup + FREE Web Design software

Other usual things, which are available with hosting packages – no need to list them all.

Really good services (review from satisfied customer, who wrote this short article

You think it”s for You? If yes,

More than 75,000 individuals have already lost their Internet domain names registered through RegisterFly.com. New class action lawsuit seeks to protect up to a million more from the same fate.

Winston/Salem, NC – March 28, 2007 – Yesterday, a U.S. District Court judge unsealed a class action lawsuit against Internet domain registrar RegisterFly along with the corporation charged with accreditation and oversight of registrars, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (“ICANN”), among others. The lawsuit (Anne Martinez v RegisterFly, ICANN et. al.) filed by Attorney E. Clarke Dummit alleges that RegisterFly has systematically defrauded its customers who attempted to register or renew Internet domain names, causing them to lose their domain names, finances, and even entire businesses. The lawsuit was initially sealed due to fears of retribution by RegisterFly.com towards plaintiff Anne Martinez for filing the suit, but since then other concerns have become more pressing, and the case was opened to the public.

Lead Plaintiff Anne Martinez fears that RegisterFly is likely to cause the loss of her website GoCertify.com, which is the primary source of support for her and her children. The GoCertify.com domain, which had a scheduled expiration date of March 18, 2007, according to Registerfly, could not be renewed (even though Anne was charged for the service of having that done), was refused transfer to a different registrar, and has had Anne”s ownership information completely removed or concealed from public databases as well as made inaccessible to her. Martinez says, “if Medina illegally shuts down my registration, I could end up losing my business that has supported me for years, and even my home, and I am only one of thousands of people in this same situation. I can not just stand by and let this happen.”

Long before the allegations of misuse of RegisterFly funds by company owner Kevin Medina for such things as escort service; a liposuction procedure; a penthouse apartment in Miami, Florida; and a $6,000 Chihuahua dog, RegisterFly had already earned a growing reputation for failing to renew or transfer domain names, respond to customer support issues, and double or triple charge for services never delivered. It was clear that RegisterFly was in trouble, and the accreditation agency of registrars, ICANN, knew it, but ICANN did not perform its duty to protect the public and continued to accredit RegisterFly and allow it to perform as a registrar.

In fact, ICANN, which collects a fee for every domain sold through its accredited registrars, did not give notice of termination of ICANN”s accreditation of RegisterFly until the day AFTER attorney Dummit served ICANN with this class action lawsuit. This provides further evidence that it is time for the American Legal System to step in and reign in this outrageous, illegal behavior that has already harmed many people around the world, and threatens to damage many more.

“I only hope that this situation can be brought under control before it becomes even worse, and that the agents responsible for all of this harm and heartache will be held accountable for what they have done,” says Martinez.
